Hello Graham as promised details from the marriage certificate dated 20th April 1840 I have now received for Elizabeth Dowley aged 25 spinster occupation Gloveress residing in Upton Snodsbury Worcestershire. Her father was William Dowley a labourer. Elizabeth's bridegroom is William Smith aged 23 a Labourer residing in Upton Snodsbury his fathers name was Samuel Smith. Witnessess to the marriage were George Checketts and Alice Sweatman.

Hope this helps please do not dismiss them just because they are not shown as residing in London. I have done this in the past only to research and find that the families moved around far more than we gave them credit for.

I have been looking at a brilliant research paper on the web written by David J Cannings-Bushell BA(Hons)"Worcester's fight for a railway and its consequences etc." and would like to thank him for his research. It shows "that there was a sharp slowing of growth from 1840 until 1850" One of the possible reasons for this was a slump in the glove trade of 22,000 jobs over 15 years. Glove trade manufacturs 1825 were estimated at 100-140 workers 30,000 including surrounding villages. By 1849 this was 40 manufacturers and 8,000 workers. As Elizabeth's marriage certificate shows she was a gloveress. So maybe her husband was a labourer associated with the manufacture also and they decided to move to look for work! I will endeavour to find out and let you know what I uncover. Hope I haven't bored you. Kind regards Carole.
