John, I am intrested in Josiah Downing's wife Mary Elizabeth Smith. I have felt for years that Josiah had a tie to Job Smith, b ca 1720 Muddy Creek area of Pa and was in SC before 1765. Job's son Joseph b ca 1748 had a land grant in Abbeville Co SC adjacent to Joshia Downing and Ebenezer Smith, supposed brother to Old Job. My Joseph Smith married Elizabeth Hallum, daughter of William Hallum from Maryland in the disputed area between Pa and Maryland, as I have been told. William Hallum died in 1782 in Abbeville County SC and Josiah Downing was one of the witnesses to his will. As the Smith group moved to what is now Pickens Co SC, Josiah received a grant there also---may have been a son of the one in Abbeville. Two of the Smiths were witnesses to Josiah's Rev War application for an indent. Also a couple of the Smiths signed a bond for a William Downing for selling liquor without a lisence in this same area in 1796. Willing to share info. Tom Smith [email protected]
