I am not actually descended from the Downums but my ancestry is all interrelated
to them and Browns and Davids and our Prather/George/David lines were in Jackson
and Morgan Counties of IN and other nearby
counties.I don't know that much on the
Downums yet, but Esther Elizabeth Downum
married John Martin Brown in AR and their two
daughters, LaVada and Bess married my two
Reed Great Uncles, Jess and Littleton Reed in
OK around Coal County. Also The Downums are
related through marriage to the David cousins
of mine. Also there may be other connections
between the Browns or Downums. One of my
Great Great Grandmother, Susannah (Prather)
David's sisters, Elizabeth Prather also married a John Brown in Jackson Co., IN in
the 1830s and I don't know if all the Brown
families were related or not.The Downums
and Reeds and Davids lived as neighbors in
AR before 1900 and Esther (Downum) Brown is
the person who knew of a Bradshaw "Grandpa"
of our David/Prather line who had six fingers
on each hand and told the Reed family that
was where the extra fingers came from when
a grandchild of my Great Uncles Riley Reed
and wife, Bertha had these extra fingers.
I heard that at least one other cousin of the
Marriage of Julie Ann (David) Evans in AR had
these extras.I have wondered if there was
any connection with the Downums to the Bradshaw also or whether Esther just knew of
him from being neighbors and friends of our
Davids and Reeds.I now think that the
Bradshaw may be our Cherokee and perhaps
Melungeon line to Thomas Prather and thus
to the David and Reed lines.I am sorry that
I do not know more on the Downums, but just
recently found them on the Downum Forum.
