DREES: Germany to Indiana to Iowa to Indiana to Illinois to Arkansas
And then what happened...............
In 1860 Fredrick DREES b. <1825> and wife, Elizabeth (nee WESSLING)
<1829> were in Washington Twp., Winneshiek Co., IA. Both were
immigrants from Oldenburg, Germany and both had been living in
Oldenburg, Franklin Co., IN (USA) where they married on 16 Jan 1850.
Their first two children were born in Franklin Co., IN.
1) MARY DREES b. <1851> IN
2) JOHN DREES b. <1854> IN
Some of their children were born in IA before this couple moved back to
Oldenburg, Indiana:
3) SOPHRONIA DREES b. <1856> IA.
4) ELIZABETH DREES b. <1859> IA
5) ANTHONY DREES b. <1864> IA
For some reason, they returned to Oldenburg, Franklin Co., Indiana where
these children were born:
6) HENRY DREES b. Sep 1871 IN
7) JOSEPH DREES b. Apr 1879 IN
#1 Their first child, MARY, stayed in Franklin Co., IN & married JOSEPH
HAVERKOS on 25 Jan 1870 Franklin Co., IN. She & Joseph had the following
children in Franklin Co., Indiana:
.....MARY R. b. Aug 1885 IN
.....HILDEGARDIS b. Apr 1890
.....JOSEPHINE b. 21 Apr 1888 IN
.....BERNADINA b. Aug 1892 IN
Mary is the only child that finally stayed put as far as I can determine.
#2 JOHN DREES married a MARY unknown (may have been a SELLMEYER)
and worked in Franklin Co., IN working as a blacksmith. Here they had
the following children:
.....ELIZABETH b. <1878> IN
.....FRANCIS/FRANK JOHN b. <1880> IN
Then they moved someplace in Illinois where this child was born:
.....LAWRENCE b. Jan 1885 IL
Then they moved to Knobel, Clay Co., Arkansas where this child was born:
.....MARTHA b. Oct 1887 AR
#3 SOPHRONIA DREES was last seen in the 1870 Oldenburg, Franklin Co.,
Indiana census. No more is known about her.
#4 ELIZABETH DREES was last seen in the 1870 Oldenburg, Franklin Co.,
Indiana census. No more is known about her.
#5 ANTHONY DREES was last seen in the 1900 Cincinnati, Hamilton Co.,
Ohio census with a wife who had been born in Illinois. He had been living in
Oldenburg, Indiana (1880). Anthony had two children born in Ohio in
this census by 1892, so he must have married this Catherine after 1880
and 1891. Perhaps he followed brother, JOHN, to Illinois and met
Catherine there. His 2 children were:
.....EDWARD b. <1902> OH
.....HENRY b. <1904> OH
#6 HENRY DREES was in Oldenburg, Franklin Co., IN for the 1900 census.
He shows up in Knobel, Clay Co., Arkansas for the 1910 census with a new
wife, Catherine. He had been married to VERONICA ROELL in Indiana. His
two daughters were born in Indiana:
.....HELEN (or HILLARD) b. <1904> IN
.....MARIE (or MURRIE) b. <1906> IN
Henry, who had taken in his mother, ELIZABETH, when his father died in
Indiana, had her living with him in Knobel also. She lived there through the 1910 census. Then she disappears. She probably died there, but I have no proof of it. Henry stays in Knobel, Clay Co., AR through the 1920 census. He and his family, disappear after that.
#7 JOSEPH DREES remained in Oldenburg, Franklin Co., IN until he appears in
the 1910 Cache Twp., Clay Co., Arkansas census. He lives with is brother,
Henry. Then he disappears.
There were namy families in Winneshiek Co., IA with the same surname. It's
possible that they returned or possible that the DREES, all German immigrants, moved together somewhere.
Anyone with any information on these, the orginal "Rolling Stones", please
contact me.
Best Wishes,
Donna in Cincinnati
