Hi all,

This was an update I wrote 12/13/1998. It gives most of what we know so far about this family in the US. If anyone has more to contribute (especially older data), please do! Tom

To my wife Laura's Drehmer relatives including:

BHudec2898 = Brenda Hudec

Hi guys,

I decided to try to solve some of the mysteries in this Drehmer family, so, armed with clues which each of you have provided, plus some of my own, I buried myself at the Tampa Public Library surrounded by microfiche reels and a reader for several days. Following is some of what I found.

There were at least 4 Drehmer (or Dramer) families living in Livingston Co, NY within a few miles of each other at the time of the census in June, 1850; John, George, Nicholas and Jacob. Notice in the following IGS extract that at least four DREHMERs immigrated from the same town to America, three at about the same time. Others obviously came to Canada first from listings I'll give you later in this letter.

In 1860, there were 2 (Jacob & Mary and George) DREHMERs in Livingston County and a John J DRAMER, just over into the next county in Wayland (Steuben Co), NY. There are also 3 DREHMERs (John, John and William) living in Brookfield (Waukesha Co), WI. and a Lorenzo DREMER in Racine, WI. Waukesha and Racine are across (or around the lower tip of) Lake Michigan from Michigan. These could include my John George and might explain why his children moved West. Another day's searching! (There are others (DREMER/DRAMER) living in IN, IL, KY, CA, PA, MD, NE, NY & WV in 1860.)

BTW, the Mormon church records lump "Tramer" with the Drehmers (Say it with a German accent and you'll see why!). Just a thought, although I haven't found any Tramer connections yet.

------------------------------
Following is a George C Dramer's family info as found in the 1850-60 census. Notice he is only 3 years older than my John George Drehmer (lineage listed later). I suspect he is John's brother (or at least a cousin). Perhaps some of this may help match up some of your data.

Notice in the preceeding listings that the fathers were all Brick or Stone Masons by trade, as was our John George. This would seem to indicate a family trade. Notice also the given names in common between families in this generation.
----------------------------------
A search of FTM Disk #317 (1850 Census Index) finds 6 listings for variations of the Drehmer name (Drehmer, Drehner (an obvious misspelling) & Dramer) living in Livingston Co, NY. After looking at the actual records, two of those were the same family, just continued on the next page. I find that, besides the ones I've already listed above (John, Jacob, Nicholas and George, who I think are all closely related), the remaining is O H DRAMER. I couldn't see any connection, but perhaps you may.

From the 1850 Livingston Co, NY Census. (Taken Aug 23, 1850)
DRAMER, O H 27, Grocer, b in NY

(The two children were in school)
----------------------------------
FYI, I found no DREHMERs listed in Leslie or Leslie Village (Ingham Co), MI in the 1900 Census. Unfortunately, as you probably know, Michigan is one of the few states whose censuses have not been officially indexed, so manual searches of every township are necessary.
----------------------------------
I also have recent correspondence from John Flannery who lists his ancestors as George and Clarissa (CLARK) DREHMER. I have not made any direct connection with his line yet, but I include it for your records.

Hi Tom,
I don't think I can be of much use to you in your search. It is interesting though--I have a copy of a "Family Record" of John George and Catherine Dreahmer, Married in Germany, that someone in my family typed up. I have had a hard time understanding exactly what it means but it does list a Wealtha Dreahmer born September 25, 1865. Her parents are listed as Jacob and Eunice Dreahmer and they supposedly lived in Michigan. Her siblings are listed as Edward, July 4, 1864; Ida, April 3, 1867; Ada July 20, 1870 and Catherine, February 7, 1881. Eunice died April1, 1883 and Ida died May 26, 1892. Apparently Jacob's parents were John George and Catherine (Bill) Dreahmer. It also says that John George's father was an accomplished violinist (I assume that was in Germany). I know that my Dreahmer is from the North Dansville, (Livingston County) area of New York as I found him listed on the 1850 census there. At the time I found that information I was not looking for Dreahmers so I didn't look to see if there were any living there. I also have three different spellings of Dreahmer-this is on the Family Record, Drehmer is on a picture I got from another family member and I also have Drahmer. Let me know if this helps or if you find anything else.

Hi, I saw your query on an aol board & spoke w/ a friend using your computer last week. Didn't hear back from you, but copied a couple of obituaries from the Saginaw News.

The birth records in Saginaw begin with 1867, so no luck in finding a birth record for Andrew Forbes or Wealtha Drehmer. However there were obituaries for both. Here they are:

Obituary in Saginaw News, January 7, 1942
"Mrs. Weltha E. Forbes - Mrs. Weltha E. Forbes, 76, widow of Andrew Glenn Forbes, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Trygve Johnson, in Ann Arbor. Weltha E. Drehmer was born Sept. 23, 1865, in New York state and moved to Leslie, Mich. as a child. Later the family moved to Mt. Pleasant and Shepherd, where she was married in December 1889. In 1919 they moved to saginaw and lived here until 1925. Since Mr. Forbes' death in 1939 she had lived in Ann Arbor. She leaved four sons, Guy and Charles Forbes of Saginaw, Loren Forbes of Dearborn and Leo Forbes of Sulphur Springs, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Sloan of Clovis, N.M. and Mrs. Johnson in Ann Arbor; two sisters, Miss Ada Drehmer of Detroit and Mrs. R.T. Poullin of Mt. Pleasant, and 11 grandchildren. The funeral will take place a 2 p.m. Friday at the Case chapel. Rev. Herbert Stressman will officiate and burial will be in Roselawn."

Saginaw News, Nov. 14, 1938
"Andrew G. Forbes - Andrew Glenn Forbes, 70, of Evart, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tryge Johnson of Ann Arbor. Mr. Forbes was born Dec. 14, 1867 in Isabella County. He married Miss Weltha E. Drehmer in 1890 in Isabella. They came to Saginaw from Tuscola county in 1918 and lived here until 1925, when they moved to Evart. Mr. Forbes was a member of the Baptist church and formerly was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Gleaners. He leaves his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Johnson of Ann Arbor and Mrs. Robert Sloan of Saginaw; four sons, Charles and Guy Forbes of Saginaw, Loren Forbes of Detroit and Leo Forbes of Tampa, Fla; one sister, Mrs. Lucas Merrill of Shepherd, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the W.L. Case chapel and burial will be in Rose Lawn."

Case Funeral Home still operates in Saginaw and the Roselawn Cemetery is right next to our church. If you want any info from either of those, just let me know. Also, if you want the copies of the obituaries, just send me your snail-mail address. Hope this helps a bit - Betty
