Hi! I am your 2nd cousin Kim (Dreith) Embry. My father was Donald Dreith, brother to George. I asked my mother for the particulars about your grandfather. What she told me was.......
George Dreith robbed the Bethalto State Bank (don't know the year). Apparently Aunt Patty, his wife, was a type of woman who wanted everything. Your grandfather didn't make much $ and thought the only way for him to be able to give his wife what she wanted was to rob a bank. He did. They had no idea who committed the crime (this was way before cameras in the banks). He would have gotten away scot free if he hadn't gone immediately and paid cash for a new Cadillac. Needlass to say, he was caught. He spent only a couple of years in jail because he had gotten several very influential letters saying what an asset he was to the community. When he got out of jail, he lived many more years until his heart gave out and he died on the operating table. This is what my mother Marjorie (Neuhaus, Dreith) Fortado told me over the weekend.
