Christopher Dresser Designer 1834-1904 - Poland?

I was born in Scotland and my father's family name is Dresser - my grandfather Robert Dresser was born in Newcastle in England but married and settled in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have traced the family tree back to Dr Christopher Dresser, a quite famous industrial designer in Britain in the 1800s, and material on him suggests there is some origins in Poland. The family fled in the 1600s and came to Britain. If this is the case, what could the name Dresser be taken from? How would it be spelt? Does anyone else have any connections with Christopher Dresser?

Thanks, Dawn Dresser
