I hope I can shed some light and also get more info at the same time. I was just at the Library in Franklin, Johnson Co., IN on March 5th and found some, hopefully, good info.
I originally went there for info in Grass /McCollum (there were a 2 siblings from each family that married into the other family). I then came across a small book publiushed around 1946 on the Dresslar/Tressler family line. I knew this name sounded familiar but took a few minutes to find my reference (I have so many line going at once that at times the names run together). Mary Dressler is a "wayback" grandmother of mine but I have no info other than a name on her and the info that is associated withPeter. Oh, I also found a printout file that shows the full, know family tree that is more up to date than the book from 1946.
Anyway, It started with the original immigrants from the Rhine River Valley in Germany, Johannes Drachsell [b. 1690] (the father) and John Peter Dresslar [b.1718] (son) came across to the US. It then procedded to document all know decendants from John Peter Dresslar. One odd thing was the different spellings of this family name, even by siblings.
John Peter had 9 know/documented children:
Jacob Dressler
John Dressler
Catherine Dresslar
Susanna Dresslar
Magdaline Dresslar
Marry Dresslar
Elizabeth Dresslar
Charles Dresslar
Henry Dresslar Sr.
The only info on Charles Dresslar wasthe marriage of Nancy Carpenter. It did not have any other decendents or info.
Before I forget, I did not find any info on the Mary Dressler that married Peter Grass and moved to Johnson County, IN.
However, Peter and Mary lived very close (1840 census records) to a William Dresslar [b.3/12/1797] and a George Dresslar [b.6/8/1806]. They are sons to Henry Dresslar Sr.
In fact a lot of the area (White River Township in Johnson County) had quite a few Dresslars and Tresslars owning land, some even original land owners.
My original thought was that Mary may be a daughter of Henry Dresslar Sr, since it seems she traveled west with the 2 sons of Henry and settled near by. Plus her year of birth is 1800, right between William & George. But with as many Dresslars/Tresslars there are in the are at that time, I am sure all types of relatives traveled together. It kind-of fits, but It is JUST a theory, absolutly no proof.
Now, what do WE know about this Charles Dresslar and has anyone seen a census record from either 1800,1810, 1820, or 1830 that can show who is in the households of either Charles and/or Henry.
If interested, I used my digital camera to take some pictures of the Maps, landowners and info from an Atlas on Johnson Co., census records and a couple of marriage certificates.
Well, it was rather long winded, but there it is. If you would like to see the images I snapped, just send me an email and I'll send them right off. I hope we can solve the mystery of Mary Dresslar soon.
thanks,
Clint McCollum
