I just found this site and although the original posting is quite dated, am pleased to provide the following information.
My grandfather's name was Herman Julius Dressler. He was born March 19, 1879 in Berlin, Germany and died in 1958, age 79. The 1910 Census for Queens, New York shows Herman Julius Dressler, 31, living with his wife Honora (nee Roman) and their first two children, Gertrude 8, and Pauline 5 years old.Gertrude and Pauline were born in New Jersey.
The 1920 Census for Jersey City shows Julius Dresser, age 40, head of family, with three children living with him, Pauline, 15, Dorothy, 4 (my mother), and William, 2 years, 11 months. Their address was 443 York Street. Gertrude and Julia were living with his mother-in-law (Roman) following the death of his wife. The Census also shows that he immigrated to America in 1882 although I have not found a ship’s manifest recording his arrival in America.
There is also another Dressler family who lived in New Jersey, no doubt related. There is a Christina Dressler in the 1920 census(age 71), with two sons Charles and Emil who lived two houses away at 441 York Street. Prior to that, in the 1910 Census they lived at 171 Bright Street. There seem to have been a lot of Dresslers in Jersey City!
According to family records, my grandfather had two brothers, Amiel and John and two sisters Anna Schloepzer and Bertha Simms. I have not yet found their records. If there are any perhaps this may provide more clues as to when he and/or his family came from Germany
