ST. MICHAELS, Md. — Mary Baker Pitt Drewrey, 97, of St. Michaels, Md., died Thursday, March 22, 2007.

Born Dec. 27, 1909, in Columbia, S.C., Mary Baker lived her childhood in Tarboro. She was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Edward Lee Pitt and Sarah Howard Pitt and the cherished sister of William Howard and John Meredith Pitt. Mary Baker was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and attended St. Mary’s College in Raleigh from 1926-29. She began a career in nursing after graduating in 1934 from Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing, New York City, N.Y. There, she met her husband Lawrence E. Drewrey and married in 1939. While he attended University of Arkansas Medical School in Little Rock, Ark., Mary Baker continued her love of nursing, opening the Pediatric Wing at University Hospital. Her profound love and understanding of children would continue throughout her life.

After World War II, the family settled in Camden, Ark., where Mary Baker was a devoted mother and an indispensable helpmate in her husband’s medical practice. She took great pleasure in teaching classes for nursing assistants, as well as writing articles for a local newspaper, The Ouachita Citizen.

After the death of her beloved husband of 52 years, Mary Baker moved to Knoxville, Tenn., where she joined St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and forged many beautiful friendships. To be close to family, she later resided in Little Rock, Ark., and St. Michaels, Md.

Mary Baker is survived by two daughters, Mary Margaret Broach and Joan Marilyn Morton; two dearly loved grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Morton Smith and husband Alan of Alexander, Ark., and Joseph Broach and wife Rachel of Portland, Ore.; two adored great-grandchildren, Devin Smith and Asa Smith; and a beloved nephew, Ron Drewrey and wife, Bernadette of Foreman, Ark.

Mary Baker joyfully embraced life and all its many blessings, taking special delight in the beauty of nature and friendship. Her unwavering faith, nurturing spirit, wit and wisdom will be lovingly remembered.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church (earmarked for St. Mary’s Scholarship Fund), 411 East Church St., Tarboro NC 27886.
