Drewes - the origin of that name?

Years ago I did a speech in college on the meanings of last names. The origin that I had for Drewes was that it came from a town (no country given) founded by an illegitimate son of Charlemagne.I suppose it may be a germanic version of the town of Dreux in France.I have seen a few Drewes from England, but what the German connection may be I do not know. We're from a German source.
My father always said that the name was pronounced "Draves" in German. That may help explain some of the variant spellings (Graves for example) for the first generations to the USA.
