We descend from the same John Drost. I have found many stories concerning the history of John Drost, including a picture of Captain Johnny. The story I have heard from 4 people is that he left home at 13 or 14 for the sea and never saw his family again. He sailed for quite a while and ended up jumping ship in Lake Charles, on a boat from New Orleans or Galveston. Two census reports say he came to America in 1869. It has been said that he was from Bremen or Bremerhaven, but we believe that is where he went to find work on a boat. We have heard that he was from the low country in Germany, possibly near the Holland/German coast. My great great grandfather Charles Richard Drost was receiving letters from family as late as the early 1940's. Last heard, some family may have been in the Metz area.
Please reply! I would love to give more information. I have a lot! Would also love to hear what you have found and how you descend.
