En 1886, Casildée Beauchamp-Desmarais et son fils aîné, Charles, voyaient leur maison s'envoler en fumée dans le feu de Sabourin, conflagration qui détruisit 110 maisons à Hull. Quatre ans plus tard, en 1890, la veuve Desmarais mourait à son tour et laissait dans le deuil huit enfants vivant dont deux garçons: Charles et Thomas. Les filles avaient épousé les Dosithée de Repentigny, Thomas Derouin, Eugène Martel, Félix Pilon et François Ranger.
