I am a 6th cousin to the James you inquired about. He was born 23 Jan 1837 in Wemyss, Fife to James Dryburgh (b. 30 Mar 1805), a linen weaver, and Margaret Beveridge (b. 14 Nov 1808), both of Wemyss. His parents did not marry until 18 Jun 1849, making James illegitimate by some 12 years. Known siblings to James are Jacobina (b. 28 Sep 1850) and Sophia (b. 1 Jul 1853). James, a collier, married Mary Meiklejohn (b. 4 Jul 1842 in Clackmannan)c. 1862 in Fife, most probably Carnock parish, where their first three children were born. The family (excepting son James)emigrated to the U.S. in 1877 aboard the S.S. Alsatia, but it appears all except eldest daughter Catherine had returned to Scotland by 1891, as they appear in the census for Beath parish, Fife. This includes daughter Helen who was born in the U.S., as well as John Rodgers, spouse to James & Mary's daughter Robina, and John & Robina's infant daughter Mary. I have the lineage on this line back to 1619, please e-mail me at [email protected] if you're interested.
