Hi, What was your uncles name the one thaat settled in Hawaii was it Joao Duarte b about 1866 .....if it is that is my gr.grandfather who stowed away on a ship and when they landed he took on the name of Joao Duarte Moniz because he was alone he hooke up with a Moniz family and took on their name so he could get off the ship in Hawaii. My father Joseph Duarte Moniz told me this story, he passed on a year and a half ago, my brother and nephew the 3rd also carries the duarte as a middle name. Could there be a connection. My dad also said there were relatives in northern California with the Duarte name that they would visit when he was a very young boy dad was born in 1917 in Hawaii the big island. Pls respond, there may be something to all of this.....Linda
