Hi Malinda, I will be glad to give you what I have as I too am having trouble with David. First, I am from the line of his second marriage, in fact my gggrandmother is Caroline Smith Ross' sister, Amanda H. Smith. As I am sure you may already know, Caroline was b April 28, 1834, George Smith was born 1837 and Amanda was b July 15, 1840 and died October 01, 1918.

I have nothing on George at this time, do you? Amanda married Solomon Mabry Oct 05, 1856 and gave birth to a daughter Mary E. on May 25, 1857. On Sept 06, 1860 she gave birth to a son, William H. Mabry. Solomon went off to war and died at the Union prison hospital in Point Lookout, MD, January 18, 1864. On July 08, 1867 Amanda gave birth to a daughter, Sophie C. "Mabry". my ggrandmother. Family lore has it that the father was Levi Franklin Shankle.

Here is an interesting fact. David C. Poplin, my ggrandfather, married D.M. and Caroline Smith Ross' daughter Sophronia Ross in December of 1880, sometime between that date and 1884 Sophronia died, I believe I have been told she died during childbrith. On February 25, 1884 David Married Sophroina's first cousin Sophie.

I have much more on our 'family' of David Smith if you want it. Now for the first marriage. There were at least 11 children. Mary 'Polly' b about 1800, John b about 1802, Paul, David, Simeon, Caswell b 1811, Christina b 1829, Laura, Mathias b 1804, Elizabeth b 1831 and Nancy.

Mary 'Polly' married Woodson Ross (David Montgomery Ross' uncle), I have lots of infor on their children.

Elizabeth married Martin Shoffner.

I think David may be buried in the old Zora aka Shankle cemetery just north of Porter, Stanly County, NC. I plan a trip there later this year and believe that many answers to our questions lie in this old abandoned cemetery.
