You do know that the old priests (even in my generation) almost always listed the 'saint' name first, thus Joseph Dumas for Dumas Joseph. That's why I suggest you search the records for your Dumas for any Joseph born about that time. For 2 cousins to carry the name of Dumas, it seems logical that they were named for a relative, an uncle or great uncle, etc.
