John, My family has probably the least common variation of Duignan. I think it is because my gg grandfather Francis came from Roscommon Co. Ireland and settled in the South. He lived in Ga. then settled in Tn. If the correct pronounciation is Diegnan, a Southerner would spell that Dagnan. The census has his name spelled so many ways! My own father pronounced it Daglan but spelled it Dagnan - go figure.
