John was born, 26 Jun 1865, son of Henry & Julia (Weaver) Duat, both natives of Bavaria, Germany.Henry was in the confectionary business in Philadelphia but later moved to farm near New Bloomfield, PA.Children of Henry and Julia Duat: Frank (d. near New Bloomfield); Henry F. (New York City); Leonard (Harrison, NE); John (Montana); Anna B. (Mrs. Robert R. Thebes, New Bloomfield, PA); Lucy (Mrs. Eugene Powell, New Bloomfield).
John Duat was raised in New Bloomfield, PA; was a merchandiser and had a livery stable at Crawford, NE; became foreman of a sheep ranch at Clearmont, WY; 28 Dec 1896, was made foreman and general manager of the R.R. Selway ranch on the Upper Big Pumpkin near Miles City, MT, for three years.John then took 5,500 ewes to Bear Creek, MT, cattle country.The cattlemen objected & after 2,013 of the sheep were killed, John signed an agreement not to bring sheep into the area for the ensuing 50 years.He moved his remaining sheep to the mouth of the Little Powder River, where he has remained. In 1910, an epidemic attacked the sheep and John was forced to quit the sheep business.He then successfully took up farming and acquired 1,300 acres of land.
On 26 Nov 1891, John married Miss Lillian E. Maine, born 6 Oct 1871, daughter of Edward P. and Henrietta (Ayers) Maine of Valley County, NE.
