I'm hoping that those researching the DNA of people having the surname Duke and variants will cooperate to expand the comparative data available to all of us. I maintain a website for the Duke surname group tests run at Family Tree DNA, which insures access to comparative information from our study to ftDNA study members but also others tested at other laboratories (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dukedna/dukedna.html). In addition, many members of the ftDNA Duke study group have cross-listed at the open-access site ySearch, which is maintained by ftDNA (www.ySearch.org). A matching service for tests from the Sorenson labs is also freely available at http://www.smgf.org/ychromosome/search.jspx.
However, there are other labs that are not so open. Their members can use our data freely and easily, but we have no free access to theirs. Oxford Ancestors, for example, requires a £50 fee and registration of one's results with them to have access to their database. This is not a matter of privacy, since anyone can access the information for the fee, it is simply regarded as a separate for-fee product. Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell in advance whether there is useful information there, even whether there are is a Duke surname study. So, I am hoping that Duke surname researchers who are members of other studies that do not provide a mechanism for sharing will let us know about their results, which we can then place (with due provision for personal privacy) on our Duke surname group website, along with those from persons tested at ftDNA. Thanks!
