Help……Isaac Duke has been a BRICKWALL for years The very first record of our Isaac Duke is the 1860 census of Fleming County, Kentucky with new wife Carolyn Murrow and her sister Mary. They are living with George W. Forman and wife Mary. The next record is his civil war pension file… From his civil war pension file...He was born 12 Mar 1841 Brown County, Pennsylvania (his pension also stated his birth as March 12 1838, and March 12, 1839) Well, there is no Brown County, Pennsylvania. In 1911, he made an affidavit to clear the matter of his birth as March 12 1838, but in 1912 he reported as March 12 1841 and then in 1920, he said March 12 1839. He also said that he was born in Brown County, Pennsylvania and that his parents moved to Kentucky when he was two(could be a ten). His mother died when he was about 17 years old. He said that he married Caroline Murry (Caroline Morrow)in 1859 in Ohio, and filed in Fleming County, Kentucky. He married Elisebeth Magee in 1880 Maries County, and then Lyda Robison (Adalida Roberson)in April 1,1883 Maries County, Missouri. He enlisted in Flemingsburg, Kentucky October 12, 1861 under Captain Henry D Palmer Company H of the 16th Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He was described as 5 feet 7 inches, fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. He was listed as age 20 and occupation laborer. He was discharged December 31, 1863 at Massey , Tennessee as a private. He re-enlisted in Massey Creek, Tennessee as a teamster Jan 1 1864 under Captain Chas a Loves Company B of the 16th Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He was discharge July 15, 1865 at Company Shops, North Carolina. He further stated in his pension file as of 1902, he had not seen his relatives in Kentucky for over 30 years. We know that he and his brother-in-law William H Duncan (same civil war unit) moved shortly after the war from Fleming, Kentucky to Maries County, Missouri by 1869. Isaac claims he lived in McQuipen County, Indiana for three years (no such place--may have meant Illinois). His brother-in-law lived in Bartholomew, Indiana (maybe Isaac did too). Anyway, you can see our problem....we are looking for ISAAC HICKS born March 12, 18-- in Penn or maybe Kentucky with parents from Pennsylvania. Carolyn’s sister Martha Murrow Duncan is living in Maries County, and sister Fannie Murrow Culbertson visits in 1874. So Isaac must have meant "his" relatives in Kentucky that he has not seen for 30 years. We know that his mother and father both have died. Sometimes the names of children provide clues: Isaac had 7 children(George W, Mary Madison (named for mom's side), Harry, Ida, Alice, Cora May, Laura B) by 1st wife and 8 children(Amanda, Virginia, Josephine, Carrell(mom's brother), Isaac jr "Ike" ,Levi, David (mom's uncle), Francis "Dewey") by 2nd wife. cathy Notify Administrator about this message?
