Otis, I am a descendant of one of the Dukes of Fairfield County, SC through Meredith Duke, whose father eludes me. My son called my attention to the Deed you posted with a witness listed as "Inz Duke". I notice that he signed with an X; So he didn't know how to spell his name, probably. My Meredith named a son Ensley, and then a grandson was given the name and told it was 'a family name'. Since I don't descend from that Ensley I had not given it a lot of thought until I started to try to find the father of an Ensley Duke raised by Aaron Duke born circa 1825 or so. Then I became acquainted with a descendant of that Ensley, who, of course, was named Ensley; each generation had one. I tell all this to say that I got email from him today, after a long dry spell, and you know how he signs his emails? 'Ens'. Now, if we are not talking the same family, it sure is a coincidence. I wish I knew the answers to your questions. I think my Meredith was the son of Moses Duke, son of the Robert Duke Tony calls Robert Duke of Fairfield, but I have nothing to connect him but hunches. shoot! He could easily be the son of a Fairfield Duke who managed never to get his name on paper......at least one that survived. But I am trying to look. Thanks for sharing Dorothy Duke Rhodes Notify Administrator about this message?
