Otis, My Meredith Duke came from Fairfield County, where I have found only one legal document with his name, to Marion County GA before 1835. Samuel Duke and Aaron Duke are also named in the document. Two known sons of Lewis Duke, along a female named Hester Duke also came to Marion County GA at the same time. Hester became a founding member of Phillipi Primitive Baptist Church in Marion (now Schley) County GA. Lewis's sons raised families on their original homesteads and died there. Meredith Duke stayed about 15 years and married Elizabeth White, before migrating to Marion County in northwest Alabama where he died in 1854 (he left GA abt 1852-53) He left his widow to raise 5 kids, and fairly well off. By the 1860 census she was wealthy, owned a large amount of land and 2 slaves. I've never figured where the money came from, unless Moses Duke was his father. Moses died in Alabama in 1850, and one of his known daughters acquired a bit of money, too. When she moved to Texas in the early 1850's with her 2nd husband (who was bankrupt), she acquired a lot of land in HER NAME. Hester Duke also married a White, since she left the church in 1842 as Hester White. Another female member of this group was named Leah who m Henry Hester, migrated to Al and died; her husband returned to GA with their children. Though I really respect Tony's hard work, I tend to agree that there was probably only one Robert Duke in the area circa 1780, at least in the same age bracket. I suspect he was related to Nehemiah Duke and to Lewis Duke; maybe even a Jeremiah. My grandfather, the youngest son of Meredith was John Meredith Duke. The two given names that seem to repeat in Meredith's descendants are Meredith, Ensley, and James....I think the James was for James White, his probable father-in-law. I prattle on like this in hopes that somebody sees it and see a different spin than I do. Plus, for some totally unknown reason, my John Duke named his eldest son Relmond Cratis Duke. I can't find a soul he might be named for. For a bit, I thought Aaron Duke had a son with that name, but finally found a document that named him as Reuben C. Duke. Have some SC microfilm at LDS that I've got to go scrutinize. Will share what I find. Thanks Notify Administrator about this message?
