Looking for Joseph Alphee Alfred Dumais info resuming Dumais-Pelletier search...
I am resuming a search I started three years ago...I am looking for more info on my Canadian(?) born grandparents. They were French Canadian. They immigrated to the U.S. When and how they enetered and where they entered I have no idea...The following is all I know and it is off of my Dad's birth certificate. I recieved solid info (Christine and Jocelyn) here and they pointed me in the right direction, but the info shared with me at that timehas now been lost and I must start my search again...this time putting back-up copies in a separate location.
MY DAD:Joseph Alphee Alfred Dumais
(full name on state birth certificate)
birthplace:clairemont, n.h.
color:white
birthdate:08 June 1917
#of child born to couple:2nd
MY GRANDFATHER:Alphee J. Dumais
birthplace:canada
color:white
age:34yrs.
residence:clairemont,n.h.
occupation:shoemaker
MY GRANDMOTHER:Laura Pelletier(maiden-name)
birthplace:canada
color:white
age:35yrs.
occupation:housewife
My dad's birth certificate and the Social Security Depts. records state that he was born in 1917, but his death certificate stated his year of birth was 1913 based on erroneous info given to the coroner's office.
My Dad was 49yrs. old when he married my mom and he was 51yrs. old when I was born. he was in the military and served some overseas when he was younger, during his first two marriages. there are reportedly 6 older children born to him from these previous marriages. then there is me and my younger full-blooded sister born to him while he was married to our mom. they divorced in 1973. mom spoke to the oldest sister, marie , shortly after I was born, and in a letter to my mom my Dad stated that Marie's date of birthday was 17th of September but the year of birth was not stated and my Mom does not remember. She would be in her 60's now, if still living, though because my dad started his family early. I don't know whom she married, but I do know according to my Dad she had twin grandchildren born to her daughter. I am a late life baby for him, as is my sister since he was 3 months shy of his 54th b-day when she was born.
He told my mom that his parents, who are listed above, were Jewish and they converted to Christianity before he was born. when my mom married him he was Catholic, but not a "practicing" catholic. he tended to more Jewish traditions and was fond of the Judaic culture...but other than this, we have no proof of anything about him. he was not open about very much at all. However, three years ago when I began this search, we did find an *Israel Dumais* a few generations back on the family tree...so, we do believe there is some truth to his statements of the Jewish blood, but we are not positive.
This is all I know for sure. It is not much to go on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not even know if my grandparents married in the United States or if they were married in Canada before they came here. I don't know if there were previous marriages for them or not, but if there were, that would explain the descrepency of Laura's last name in the family lineage when she married Eugene.
We do not even know who the older sibling is on his birth certificate. We know none of his siblings names...He told my Mom that he was the 6th or 7th child in his family. The certificate may mean he is the 2nd child of that marriage and either Laura or Alfred, or both, had been previously married.
Please help me!!!
Thanks so much,
Gloria (DuMais) Sutton
