Duncombe Pit in Kingswood Forest
Hello, Duncombes:
I am writing not to track down relatives but rather to ask whether anyone has information on the Duncombe Pit mine that was in the Kingswood (near Bristol) area in Gloucestershire, England, in the 1800s. The 1851 British census gives my g-g-grandparents' address as 25 Duncombe. This was likely in the area of Two-Mile Hill in St. George parish. The area has also been described to me as follows:
"Duncombe (or Dunscombe) was a small huddle of cottages on the top of a hill overlooking Conham Vale which was the boundry between St. George and Bitton parish to the east."
Duncombe Pit (I've also seen it as Duncoomb on the old maps) appears to be in the same area, and was a working mine until it was closed sometime before 1871. I believe that the name came from a lord of one of the manors in the area.
Does anyone have any info about that Duncombe family or about the mine itself?
Many thanks.
