Roots Web's SSDI
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
has a Charles W. Dunford b. 25 Aug 1920, d. 26 May 1993 in ZIP code 63119 (Saint Louis). The SSN was issued in Virginia.

If it is worth $27 to you, The Social Security Administration will send you a copy of his Social Security Number application. It should have the his birth date, birth place, father's name, mother's name (maiden surname), his address at the time of the application and his empoyer at the time. Your grandfather may have lied, inadvertently or advertently, about his mother's name.
