William Dunford b Cheverill, Wiltshire, England 1815 d Rakaia, Canterbury, New Zealand 1895 youngest child of John Durnford and Mary Phillips and

Elizabeth Smith Dunford b London, England, 1815 d Rakaia, Canterbury, New Zealand 1887 dau of George Smith and Mary Russell

were my ggg grandparents.

They arrived in Lyttleton, NZ with their children. Edward 1836, Willam 1838, Charles 1840, Martha 1841, Henry 1843, Jacob 1845, George 1847. 8 year old Martha was my gg grandmother.

The Cressy one of the "First Four Ships" of 16 sent out by the Church of England. The ships were also called "The Summer Ships"

The Cressy left about 1 Sept and arrived 27 Dec 1850.

The Dunfords lived in the Hagley Park in Christchurch with other families in tents and shacks and then finally settled in Rakaia where William built a hotel and a ferry.

William Elizabeth and Martha are all buried in a small cemetery in Rakaia, NZ where there is a plaque that was placed by descendants in 2000 to commemorate the 150 anniversary of their arrival.
