Hi there,
I also have Dengates. 1800s to be found in Northiam Sussex. Prior to that Wittersham. I have James 1767 m. Mary b.1771, the only son for the moment is John b. 1793 married to Elizabeth Quaife b.1794 (m.1811). I know that there were also Dungates and wonder to what extent there was confusion over the name. It is also possible that the Dengates originated from France with the name of de la Barre which slowly became anglicised. Wonder if we might find a link somewhere.
Cheers
Lise in Brittany
