Thanks for your interest, Carolyn.

We now have four Dungates and two Dungates who have had the DNA test, which means that we already have a useful tool for Dungate (and variants of the name) family research.

All but one of those so far tested (one of the Dungates) have been shown to be related and to be connected with Westwell, Kent in the 1700s. Prior to starting this DNA approach I had only suspected I might be related (the link being more than 200 years ago) to one of the others who took the test - although there was no paper trail to support my suspicion.

Not only have I found four new relatives, but two of those tested have identical 'scores' on all 43 markers tested, yet I had never even heard of three of those tested in my research previously, although I have been researching the name for decades.

The fact that one of the Dungates is different, shows that there are at least two totally different Dungate lines. I consider, however, that it is highly unlikely there will be more.

This means, Carolyn, that if you have a male Dungate relative (e.g. brother, uncle or cousin on your father's side) a test would almost certainly provide you with at least one new relative and assist you in tracing your line. For male Dungates (or variant names) it is much easier, of course - simply take the test. The test simply involves rubbing a cotton bud stick round the inside of your mouth and returning it in an envelope to the lab.

It is still possible that the Westwell line was connected with the East Grinstead area prior to the 1700s but it is equally probable that at leastsome of those with Reigate links tie in with the (so far) singleton Dungate tested - only the test can show that.

If you, have a tree please send it, Carolyn - I might have some paper trail information that might help you. In my own case, I have not discovered any links to the Reigate area, although I have collected some data on Dungates there.
