Charles City County to Halifax County to Patrick County Va

One thing that kept confusing me when I started trying to trace my Dunkley ancestry was the names of the counties kept changing. So I looked up some dates when the counties was found. In 1634 the land that Patrick County is today was part of Charles City County. Later in 1703 it became a part of Prince George County. After that it started changing pretty frequently. 1728 it was included in Brunswick County. Briefly in 1746 the county was named Lunenburg County (after the Hanoverian Kings of Great Britain.
In 1752 Halifax County gained the lands of Patrick. It changed again in 1767 - Pittsylvania County was named for William Pitt. In 1776 Henry County was formed. The Henry County then conatined several of the now counties in that region. In 1791 Patrick County was formed along with Henry County to honor founding father Patrick Henry. The county seat of Patrick, Taylorsville, was renamed Stuart to honor JEB Stuart after the civil war.
So this might help in understanding the areas, or it may have confused one even more.
