Archibald Dunlap, the third son of Robert and Olive (Butterfield) Dunlap, was born 15 August 1807, in Bedford, New Hampshire. He was educated in New Hampshire, but as a young man decided to come west and seek his fortune. He and his brother Robert sailed from New Hampshire around the coast of Florida and landed in New Orleans. They explored that area for awhile but decided the land was too wet and swampy, so they traveled up the Mississippi River and landed in Illinois. Here they found beautiful farm land and decided to stay the summer and farm on rented land. They raised a good crop and when it was harvested in the fall, lacking a suitable wagon for hauling, they made a deal with a neighbor to take their harvest as well as his own for a share of the profit.Well they never saw or heard of the neighbor again. They decided to return to New Hampshire by land and on the way they stopped to visit their Uncle James Dunlap in Dearborn Co., Indiana. Here they met a neighbor girl named Almira Chandler and Archibald fell in love. They were married 1 November 1829 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. They lived in Indiana for some time and had two children born there. They then moved to Fayette Co., Illinois, where Almira's family lived.

After a few years they decided to move to Texas and traveled by wagon to what was then Bowie Co., Texas.Later as the counties were divided, they lived in Harrison and Cass Counties. In 1845 Archibald was the first justice of the peace in the area and held court under a large tree. When the Civil War started to come near to the area where they lived Archibald took his family and moved further west to Hill County. On of the Dunlap boys, James joined the Confederate army and fought for the south. The others all fought for the north.Archibald did not believe in slavery, although his brother Robert had many slaves.Grandmother Lavina said that when harvest time came Uncle Robert sent slaves to help out with the harvest.Archibald treated the slaves kindly.During the Civil War, he helped the slaves escape,He would hide them under hay in wagon and haul them to a safe place where they could hid and escape.(This information was taken from old letters written by Robert Dunlap to his relatives in New Hampshire.)
