the duplessis family in Suriname, south america was in the eightienth century owner of several estates, for example Bergen Op Zoom estate at the Commewijne river owned by Salomon Duplessis, and Nijd en Spijt estate also at the Commewijne river, owned by his daughter Susanna Duplessis. Susanna had a bad reputation of treating her slaves very cruelly, as is described in a 1790 book "narrative of a 5 year expedition against the revolted negroes in Surinam", by John Gabriel Stedman. However, there are no other sources to verify Stedman's remarks about Susanna. Nonetheless, as years went by she has become the Bad Witch of Surinam history. Every schoolkid in Surinam can tell you terrible things about her.....
