Tempy Dupuy and Joshua Stephens / KY / ? GA, MS/
Tempy Dupuy and Joshua Stephens are my 4gr grandparents. I'm only in the first stage on researching my Dupuy line and am just speculating at this point, with virtually little to no facts to work with.
I descend from Tempy/Joshua's son, Elisha, and his wife Jane "Jenny" Holt.
One of Elisha & Jenny's daughters, Artemissa Stephens, was born in Mississippi on 3 Apr 1842, and I wondered what might have brought about their move to MS.
I recently noticed that it wasn't only Tempy & Joshua's on, Elisha, who had moved to MS in the early 1840.Their son, Joseph, and his wife, Martha Ann Holt (Jenny Holt's sister) had also moved to MS and had one son, Henry, born there 6 Aug 44 in MS.Another son, Doswell Stephens also moved to MS at that time, but Doswell md. a MS woman and remained in MS from that point on.
Had Elisha and Joseph Stephens not had one child each born in MS, no one would have known they ever lived in MS because they were in the KY census records in 1840 and 1850.
I wonder if any of Tempy & Joshua's other children might have moved to MS when Elisha, Joseph, and Doswell moved there?Perhaps, but unless they also had children born to them in MS, before returning to KY, there would be no records to prove they were there...unless there happened to be family history, mentioning the round trip move to and from MS.
1850 SMITH CO, MS census record:(Four dwellings listed in order, with no dwellings in between them)...
THOMAS DUPUY- 60 YR.(1790) Georgia
ALBERT DUPUY- (prob. s/o Thomas) MS
DOSWELL MEADOWS - KY
DOSWELL STEPHENS - (s/o Tempy & Joshua Stehens) b. 1822KY
On the previous census page, there as a Neddy Meadows, b. 1795KY.This might be Doswell Meadows father. With Doswell Meadows living amongst the other three, with his Doswell name, and his being from KY, I would guess he was probably a blood relative in some way with our Stephens or Dupuys in KY.
From the birth year of Thomas and Tempy, it's poss. he was Tempy's brother...or at least related to her. If so, it's poss. she could have been born in GA.In ancestry.com, I did notice that there were a number of Dupuys born in GA in the late 1790s, who moved to and stayed in various KY counties.
Elijah Stephens, another son of Tempy & Joshua's, had a daughter named Tempy Stephens, b. 1824 KY.She married Giles Powell Dupuy, b. abt 1817 MS.I believe they married in TN, but their first child was born in MS in 1842 (I'll need to check on the yr).I believe the next two children were born in TN and AL.I realize it could just be a coincidence that Giles and Tempy Stephens Dupuy happened to have a child in MS during the same years her Stephens' lst cousins were in MS, but with Giles last name being Dupuy and his being born in MS, their being in MS at the same time might not just being coincidental. As I said, I have few facts and am speculating.
I do not know if Giles was part of the same Dupuy family as Joshua's wife was, but it wouldn't surprise me.Dupuy was certainly not a very common surname, at least not in the U.S.I brought up the name Dupuy when I was talking to a lady from France. She said Dupuy is as now a common name in France as the name Smith is in the USA.
I have not gone through a lot of MS records to see if other KY Stephens groups might have also moved to MS in the early 1840s.Whether they did or didn't go to MS, Tempy & Joshua's children flocked there together at the same time.I don't know if any of them besides Doswell Stephens stayed in MS or not. Those siblings who ended up leaving MS probably weren't there for too many years, prob. 5 yr. or less. Some had children there but then went back to KY or where ever.
Because these Stephens' mother was a Dupuy, I can only speculate that their Dupuy relatives, Thomas Dupuy in partiular, may have had something to do with their going to Smith Co, MS. I wonder if Tempy & Joshua may have also ventured to MS when their children went there?
In the 1850 census, it gives the birth place for all Thomas's children as Massachusetts.I'm very sure that was a transcribers' typo or Miss was misread as Mass.
I would appreciate any opinions about this move having to do with Tempy's Dupuy family and her Stephens children and possibly a temporary move by Tempy & Joshua as well.
I may be reading the whys and wherefores incorrectly, and that's okay.At least we have something to look into a little more closely and something new to prove or disprove.
