Jesse Durden - Calhoun County, FL 1860

I am researching Jesse Durden, who was murdered by vigilantes in Calhoun County, Florida, on September 24, 1860.

This murder was the opening phase an a mini-civil war of sorts that ended with the Florida militia came in to save the Durden family from a group of 75 or so vigilantes who were trying to either drive them out of Calhoun County or "exterminate" them.

I would love to hear from any descendents of Jesse or any other members of the Durden family who were living in Calhoun County in 1860. I am particularly interested in learning any family stories about these events, or finding any eyewitness accounts (diaries, letters, etc.) written by members of the family at that time.

Best,
Dale Cox
