Capt. John Durden

I am looking for information on Capt. John Durden who married Mary Hilliard. He was the father of John Durden the Revolutionary Soldier, and grandfather of Jacob & William Durden, who were also Revolutionary Soldiers. Was "captain" an honorary title, or did Capt. John Durden serve in the military, possibly the Virginia Militia? If this is the case, I'd like to find out what unit he served in, and during what period. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
