G W Durfee shipwreck 1865 SS Republic

Folks working on researching a shipwreck off the Georgia Coast in 1865 are trying to find out more about a man named G.W. Durfee. There is a possibility that he was George Washington Durfee, the engraver. The shipwreck of the SS Republic is featured in the September issue of National Geographic.

Does anyone know anything about a G. W. Durfee who fits this description?
