Durfees in Ohio

Many researchers have family trees for Edmund, Perry, James, and Jabez Durfee that need some correction regarding the Ohio place names. Several sites I’ve consulted show Durfee family members as born in “Perrysburg, Wood (or Lucas) Ohio” but that Perrysburg is not where the Durfees lived. Ohio county boundaries were changed after the Durfees left for Illinois and the places they lived are now in different counties than they were in the 1830s.

The town of Perrysburg associated with James Durfee (Durphy) was in Jackson Township, Wayne County, at the time his family was there. The town has since been renamed “Albion” and the township was moved into the newly formed Ashland County in 1846.

That same year, 1830, Edmund, Perry and James were all in Huron County, Ohio, Ruggles Township. Ruggles township was taken from Huron County in 1846 to become part of Ashland County too. To add to the confusion, there still is a PerrysVILLE in Jackson Township, Ashland County!)

Personally, I prefer to list the original towns/counties in my records with a notation about the name of the place today. It is much easier to negotiate the censuses and to use old maps if one has the place names that were used at the time available too.
