Janice:
I was long puzzled by the same question, but after 30 years of working on this family I believe that Jabez died in White Cloud, Iowa, and not in White Cloud, Kansas. It's certain that his ex-wife Elizabeth (Davis Goldsmith Brackenbury) died there in 1876, where she was living with one of the sons from her earlier marriage to Joseph Brackenbury (she apparently stopped using the name Durfee when she and Jabez went their separate ways, at the time the Mormons abandoned Nauvoo in 1846). It seems clear, however, that Jabez had moved on to Iowa and that it was entirely fortuitous that the ex-spouses died in towns with the same name. Primary documents from their later years are frustratingly scarce, I know.

Jennifer Brackenbury Boger (3-g-granddaughter of Elizabeth)
