Dear John Karp
have only just now (January 2003) noticed your appeal of September last - sorry !
There were DURHAMs based in Scotland from at least the fourteenth century.I've traced my Mother's DURHAM ancestors back to her Great-x-10 Grandfather, James Durhame (born 1602 in Edinburgh).Actually there are DURHAMs on both sides of Mama's ancestry, mostly based at Newhaven (now part of Edinburgh) and I have a long list of this family and immediate descendants.
There were DURHAMs in the area around Dundee and in Fife as well as around Edinburgh and in the Scottish Borders. Also of course in England - the Lord Bishop of Durham had lands all over the place and I guess some of these families may have been traceable back to these areas. Some of them were what we'd now call 'Landed Gentry' and others were fishermen, weavers and just plain ordinary folks.
Hope this is of interest to you.
SALLY
