This is speculation.I have a friend in Portland who may be able to go to the Historical Society to check which Durham has a wife named Satira - that may put speculation to rest.
Anyway, the person described in your original message about George H. Durham is looking more and more like my wife’s great grandfather who has always been called George C. Durham.I’ve gone back to sources and so far the only place that lists the great grandfather as George C. Durham is a genealogy of the Jonathan Green descendants. It is entirely possible that the author was confused about the two Georges and listed the son instead of the father.
This scenario makes a lot of sense to me: George Hannibal Durham marries Satira Emiline Clark. Then they name his first (and only) son, the third child, George and give him the middle name Clark because that is his mother’s maiden name.
I’ve also written to George’s granddaughter (now 95 years old) and asked her to see if she has a certificate or any other document that lists the middle initial for her grandfather George Durham or for her uncle George Durham. We’ll see.
If all else fails, I will be out in Portland next summer and will try for a marriage or birth record in the Multnomah County archives at Salem, Oregon. And, of course, I will visit the Historical Society to look at their clipping files, biographies, and photos.
