Three or four of us with Durling (Dirling, Derling, etc.) ancestors have been researching this family in Westmoreland Co., PA and would be happy to share information. One pertinent record I have come across is from August 20, 1856, when Jane Patterson of Derry Township and her husband James Patterson sold some land to David Dirling for $60. This was a lot on Spring St. in Latrobe. Jane had purchased it from Oliver and Elizabeth Barres in 1852.
I have looked only at the transcript of the 1850 census - it is on the Westmoreland GenWeb site - and it lists David as age 20 in 1850. In this case, I would think he was the son of Alexander and probably a brother of the Sarah you may be looking for.
There was a Sarah Derling born about 1813 who married a Mechling. I would guess that she and Alexander were siblings, but this needs to be proved.
Ed Broadus (my mother was a Durling).
