Dear Laurence:
I'm sure it is the same Durnan family! My grandfather was the youngest child, William, who married Kathleen Richter in Oroville, Wash., in 1929. They had five children. My mother was their only daughter, Mildred Durnan.
My grandfather died in 1959, so I remember him only slightly. But he visited the Iowa relatives a few times, and I have all his pictures of those trips. My grandmother (Kathleen Richter) died in 1991. She wrote names on the backs of all the pictures to identify the relatives.
I live in Oregon, but most of the Durnan relatives here are in Washington state. Another cousin lives close to me. She is Joan Testin, a granddaughter of Kate, I believe.
Just this last summer I saw my first photo of Stephen and Bridget Durnan. My uncle, Denis Durnan, from New York brought it with him on a visit. It was the first time I'd learned that they were married in Illinois.
I've also been in touch with Martha Slagle of Iowa who tells me there is a Durnan family reunion in Iowa each July.
I'd love to exchange any information about the Durnan family. There are quite a few of us out here on the west coast.
I haven't found much about Stephen in Ireland...although one of my cousins found Durnan cousins there during a trip last summer.
Thank you for responding, and I hope we'll be able to work on this together!
Sincerely,
Anne Voegtlin
