Shaking The Durrance Tree
I'd like to set some records straight. There are no headstones at the Hart Durrence Cemetery on Ft. Stewart, GA.No one can say positively who is buried there. The William Durrance, Jr., in all the history books that is reported to be the husband of Margaret Ann Burkhalter and said to be buried there has the date of death of Luraney DeLoach's husband given when she applied for widow's pension in Charlton Co.
And there were probably no headstones in the Barnard Cemetery.I believe a person or persons had those headstones placed there closer to present day. There is no historical records identifying Jesse Durrance's son as William H. Durrance. The census identifies him as James Henry Durrance in Jesse's household. The only Williams in Tattnall Census were William husband to Margaret Burkhalter and William H. husband to Isabelle Smith.William H. Durrance husband to Isabelle Smith didn't die in the Civil War.For all we know, the William Durrance who died in the Civil War was the husband of Margaret Burkhalter. And the Henry A. Durrance who died was James Henry Durrance son of Jesse Durrance. There were three J. H. Durrances from Tattnall in that war.Don't you think the book keeper would have thought to name one Henry A. Durrance to make it easy on himself. Thanks for your time.
