Glen E. Durst
DURST, Glen E., 84, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2004. He was a native of Tampa, as was his father. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo Pauline Brown Durst, and his second wife, Sarah (Sally) Moody Durst. He is survived by first son, Bruce Durst, and wife, Janet; and his second son, Gary Durst, and wife Marilyn; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He attended Gorrie Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and Henry B. Plant High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from Parks Air College in St. Louis. He held an aircraft airframe and powerplant mechanic' license, an inspector's license and a pilot' license with multiengine ratings for land and sea and instruments. As a commerical pilot he had over 10,000 hours flying time and over 2 million miles. He was chief pilot and aircraft maintenance supervisor for H. Woolf and Son, transporting live tropical fish over the entire United States and Canada from 1949 to 1961. After his flying he became the supervisor of operations at Tampa International Airport for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority. He retired in 1984 as the director of general aviation for Hillsborough County and manager of Peter O'Knight Airport and the Plant City Airport. He was inducted into the Southern Conference National Hot Rod Association Hall of Fame for Early Pioneers, having been recommended by Don Garlits. After his drag racing days, he rebuilt and restored Corvairs as a hobby, eventually donating a pristine 1965 Corsair to the Don Garlits Museum. By his request, funeral arrangements will be private for family only. The family will have an open house for friends at the Durst residence, today (Sunday).
