When I noticed you spelling this name as Dussault or Dufaut or Dufault, it made me wonder if you had seen some old hand-written documents somewhere. If so, up until the late 1700's, the people writing the name may have used the single letter "f" which was pronounced as "ss". People confuse the old use of the "snaky f" with the actual letter "f". It is a totlaly different letter and the sound is always "ss" (hard s, as in "hiss").
This is the same as the German "ß" letter which is also spelled and pronounced as "ss" in English.
