Ralph E. Dutch, b. 1855, Farmington, IL > 1886 MT - Bio

A biography/family history of Ralph E. Dutch, Melrose, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 1100. Ralph's ancestors came to the American colonies from Holland many years prior to the Revolution and settled in Pennsylvania. Ralph E. Dutch was born 11 Nov 1855, son of Eben Dutch, born & raised in Augusta, ME, and died in 1856, Richland, Sangamon County, IL. At Shoreham, VT, Eben married Miss Maria L. Moore, a native of VT who died at Farmington, IL. After his marriage Eben moved to Sangamon County, IL, where he was a pioneer farmer, his farm located at Richland, four miles from Farmington. Children of Eben and Maria (Moore) Dutch: Florence M. (Mrs. M.F. Sheppard, Boone, IA), Fred R. (Crete, NE); Winthrop (Springfield, IL), Ralph E. (Montana).

Ralph E. was educated in rural schools and at age 18 went to Springfield, IL, where he worked in the Illinois Watch Factory until 1886 when he went to Glendale, MT, and worked in the store of his uncle, Henry S. Pond, one of th early pioneers of that region. In 1897, he moved to Melrose as manager of a store his uncle established there. In 1912, formed a partnership with J.E. Reid (Reid and Dutch) where they handled a general line of merchandise.

At Butte, MT, Ralph married his first wife, Miss Effie M. Miller, born in Indianapolis and died in Butte, MT, in 1913, leaving no children. On 2 Jan 1918, Ralph married Mrs. Eugenia Miller, born in Canada.
