I do know that Gideon Dutcher the elder was still living in 1805 - his will dated June 22, 1805 was probated in Dutchess County in October of that year. My ancestor Abraham Mace was one of the witnesses (his son-in-law).

In the 1790 Pawling census, Gideon Ducher is found with two other males over 16, 5 under age 16, and 5 females over age 16 (thanks for the link!).

Your question has not been definitively answered for many years. If you go to this link, you will find the Dutcher Family Association newsletter #2 from 1935, wherein the question is asked:

"35. Who were the parents of Gideon Dutcher, b. 1775 d. Jan. 13 1812 or 1815 at Chatham, Columbia County, N.Y.? When did he marry Sarah Manchester?"

Unfortunately, this newsletter ended in 1938, leaving many of the questions unanswered. Also if you have read Griffin's "The Dutcher Family," you will find Gideon Dutcher and Jannetje Vredenberg, but no further information on their children.

I am suspicious that Gideon Dutcher the younger may have been the g-son of Gideon Dutcher and Jannetje, but these folk had such large families, over many years that it is possible he is their son. I suppose we aren't going to solve this one very easily.

Take care,
