Hi Joan,
George Duthie Jnr (1835-1884 Australia) was my great great grandfather. Determining his mother has been difficult to say the least.

I am in possession of 2 documents showing his mother's name which were recorded when he was alive. In his shipping records to Australia his parents are recorded as George and Isabella (this was 1855). His marriage certificate to Christine Nicholson (1863) shows Christina Smith as his mother. In both instances George Duthie is recorded as his father.

In the 1841 Census he is living with Christian Smith/Duthie, Alexander C and Catherine, George's children. In the 1851 Census he is living with older brother Alexander Crombie and his family (he consequently named his first child after this brother).

His 1884 death certificate was completed by his son. The mother here is incorrect. His daughter (my great grandmother) is incorrectly inserted here.

Perhaps some of this may lead to us helping one another.
Robyn
