Just a reminder here that this above has not been concluded.

It sounded like a good theory, however, I'm guessing that the book must have a typo. I have again reviewed the obits of her children, from Duty, and they each refer to her as Aswell.

Also, went back to the 1850 census, Wiley Duty's sister in law Sarah Aswell was living with them. That again backs up the Aswell name, versus Atwell.
