Talbert Raymond Duty, 87, of Airport Road, Chapmanville, West Virginia, formerly of Ragland, West Virginia crossed over Jordon on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, following a brief illness.

Born in Logan County, he was the son of the late Charles Wilson and Mary Diamond Duty. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Browning Duty, three son-in-laws, Donald M. "Bud" McNeal, Charles Hugh Madden and Fred Elkins, four brothers, Roy, Ernest, George and Thurman Duty, two brother-in-laws, Herbert Farley, Sr. and Elliott Ray Burke.

He is survived by his second wife, Lilly Lou Floyd Baisden Duty.

He was a World War II veteran serving with the United States Army as a heavy machine gunner at the young age of 16. Having received the good conduct medal, Army Occupation Germany, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge as well as the Bronze Star and Purple Heart as he was wounded in Northern France, during the Normandy Invasion of June 6, 1944. He worked as a coal miner for more than 30 years, was a member of the UMWA Local 8752 and retired from Kelly #5 Mine at Blair. He loved gardening and reading and telling stories of days past to his family and friends. Because of the war his most cherished honor was receiving was his high school diploma in 2003.

In addition he is survived by his children with Gladys having one son, Raymond (Anita) Duty of Delbarton; three daughters, Rosa Lea McNeal of Charleston, Joyce Elkins and her companion Charles Patterson of Lakeland, Fla., and Carol Lynn (Stewart) Hall of Catlett, Va.; one brother, C.W. (Kay) Duty of Wapakoneta, Ohio; seven sisters, Ruth (Jack) Shannon of Lakeland, Ruby Farley of McCarr, Ky., Roberta Duty of Columbus, Ohio, Margie (Ira R.L.) Farley of Hardy, Ky., Belva Burke of Defiance, Ohio, Pat Smith of Columbus, Ohio and Corena Stabnau of Wyandotte, Mich.; grandchildren, Robert Eugene (Julie) Elkins, Stephanie Tomblin, Antha Renee Kinser, Beth (David) Boggess, Carla (Matthew )Wilburn, Christopher Madden, Jonathan (Joyce) Barath, Christy Chenoweth, Thomas (Tony) Sloan, Dustin (Tabetha) Sloan, Larry (Barbara) Browning; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many extraordinary nieces and nephews.
